The best network in Belgium
Proximus is a leading Belgian telecommunications company offering services such as fixed and mobile telephony, internet, and digital television for both consumers and businesses.
With a strong focus on innovation and quality, Proximus connects people and organizations across Belgium.
To guarantee a stable network connection, especially during peak hours with thousands of visitors, we collaborated with Proximus NXT.
They used a technique called “Event Reservation,” a pre-slicing method that reserves a portion of the available network capacity for specific applications, such as 4G payment devices that do not yet support 5G.
Some payment terminals were equipped with special SIM cards from Proximus NXT, giving them access to the reserved network capacity. This ensured that even when the mobile network became congested, payment traffic on these devices continued to run smoothly.
Other devices used our own wireless Wi-Fi network as a backup.
This successful collaboration resulted in over 80,000 smooth transactions across two event days.
During “Winter in Dendermonde,” 5G slicing was applied for the first time in Belgium to guarantee payments at an event. We joined forces with Proximus NXT to test this innovative technology, creating a stable and reliable payment infrastructure — even during the busiest moments of the winter bar.
Events often cause network congestion, which can slow down or even temporarily disrupt mobile payments. As we offer a fully cashless payment system, a stable and fast network connection is crucial.
Proximus NXT implemented an advanced 5G slicing technology, reserving a dedicated portion of the 5G network capacity for our payment solutions. This ensured that payment terminals could operate optimally, regardless of how many visitors were using the mobile network at the same time. For the very first time, 5G slicing was used for payments at an event.
Thanks to this technology, all transactions ran smoothly and without interruptions, even during peak moments. This not only proved the effectiveness of 5G slicing, but also highlighted its advantages for event organizers who rely on stable and fast payments.
This successful test in Dendermonde confirms that 5G slicing can be a game changer for the event industry. We continue to innovate to provide organizers and visitors with a seamless payment experience, regardless of the circumstances.
